Morticia Knight Schools Us on the Rules of Love #EroticRomance #Interview

Drumroll, please! Can you feel the excitement? Author Morticia Knight takes center stage with a fascinating interview paired with a great excerpt of her new release. Take a look at this!

Welcome to the blog, Morticia. I try to keep the interviews simple so you'll hopefully come back one day.  I appreciate your time.

Can you begin by telling us about your new release?

The Rules of Love is the 2nd book in The Hampton Road Club series. It’s an M/M BDSM romance set in the era of the 1920’s. The Club is located near Los Angeles, so a bit of Hollywood seeps into the stories. The men who attend the elegant club not only have to lead secret lives because they’re gay, but because they enjoy sadomasochism. Fortunately, all my men get their well-deserved Happily-Ever-Afters ;-)

What inspired this story idea?

I have a 7 book series entitled Gin & Jazz that is an epic telling of a young Jack’s journey from obscurity and poverty to the heights of riches and silent film stardom. Along the way he loses loves, finds it - then finally learns what true love is and what’s really important. Book 5, Studio Orders, features the head of the Jack’s studio and his ex-chauffeur. As it happens, studio chief belongs to the Hampton Road Club.

The club was more of a backdrop in that book, but there was one side character, Saul, who needed a story and many people asked what the club was all about. In Studio Orders, the MC’s never actually go to the club – it’s only referred to.

Did a lot of research go into it?

Oh my, yes. Before I ever began Book 1 of Gin & Jazz (Hollywood Bound) I spent 2 months researching the era – the slang, fashion, economics, transportation – even such things as whether refrigerators were in use yet. (hint: they’d only just begun to be used, but only the rich could afford them. They cost about half as much as a Model T)

This was back in the summer of 2013, but I still research that era to this day. I’m working on book 4 of Hampton Road right now, and I just had to look up whether the term ‘slick back’ (For a man’s greasy combed back hair - they used an oil called Brilliantine, or Vaseline if they were poorer) was one word or two. It’s two.

Care to share some of your favorite lines from the novel?

(Saul commenting on the newness of their relationship) “Nothing unknown is ever

simple. It has to be revealed before you can understand it.”

(Saul reassuring Kenneth that he hasn’t failed him during a BDSM scene) “There now. I’m not disappointed in you and we’re going to reclaim your pleasure together. That belongs to you and you belong to me. Therefore, I want my pleasure back too.”

Do you feel that you can relate to one character in this book more than the others? If so, why?

I relate to aspects of each one, but the unifying theme between them would be how much they want to love and be loved in an all-encompassing way. I think that’s one of the biggest attractions of BDSM – the deep trust and bond that has to exist between two partners.

What is your writing space like? Do you need quiet or do you prefer background noise?

It’s a huge mess! I’m not one of those authors where someone can come in and take a photo of my work area – it would turn into a Hoarders episode. I just never have enough time to keep up with all the filing. The Post-it note story ideas are the worst of it.

I have to have music going – preferably driving electronica or soundtrack beats. Otherwise, I end up power napping at the computer.

What is the most daring thing or experience that you've done that you wouldn't mind sharing with us?

There’s probably a few because I tend to do dumb things, but I’ll go with the white water rafting trip I took on the Snake River in Wyoming. And yes – I grabbed the chicken rope in the middle of the raft.

Is there a motto/wisdom in life that you live by? Or a favorite inspirational quote?

There are many by Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson that I love, but I’m alos a sucker for Galadriel’s line from The Fellowship of the Ring:

“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.”

Ooo...I love that. I'm going to let that one sink in a moment. Thanks so much for sharing yourself with us. Now let's look at your new release. I'm positive it will be a top the charts!

The Rules of Love (The Hampton Road Club 2)

Release Date: February 6th, 2015
Publisher: Totally Bound
Genre: M/M Historical BDSM
Cover Artist: Posh Gosh
Series Blurb:
Welcome to the Hampton Road Club. It’s the 1920’s and men who enjoy Dominance and submission have to be very careful that their dark desires aren’t discovered. The exclusive and secret Hampton Road Club near Hollywood is one of many private homes around the world that offers facilities for those who practice sadism and masochism. Meet the men who search for love amongst the world of bondage, whips and chains. This is where a Master can find a submissive to cherish forever and a submissive can give himself to his Master for a lifetime of painful pleasure.

Rules of Love Blurb:

Master Saul is captivated by the beautifully submissive Kenneth and the boy’s love of pain. Unfortunately, Kenneth belongs to Master Preston.

It’s 1926, and as one of the founding members of the Hampton Road Club, Master Saul Liebowitz has enjoyed the charms of many willing submissives over the years. One of the newer submissives to the club has captured his attention more than anyone has in a long time. Kenneth is tall, muscular and also seems to have a greater love of pain than most. If only Kenneth didn’t already belong to another Master.

After Kenneth’s Master died years before, he allowed himself to be taken in by the promises of Master Preston. As time has gone by, Preston has become increasingly crueler to the point where Kenneth fears for his life. They’ve recently joined a sadomasochism club and Kenneth can’t help but yearn for the handsome Master the other boys speak so highly of – Master Saul.

Preston takes things too far one night, and when Saul and his good friend, Master Aaron do some investigating, they realize that Kenneth might be in real danger. Amidst turmoil at the club over whether there should be rules to keep the boys safe and Preston’s play for power, Saul searches for a way to save Kenneth from what he’s sure is a deadly situation.

Both men fight for what they believe to be the right thing. When they find their way to one another, a wonderful new world opens up for them together. But there’s one man out there who refuses to let go of the old ways. Kenneth is his property and Master Preston won’t give him up.

Reader Advisory: Contains scenes of violence and dubious consent.
Although part of a series best read in sequence, this can be read as a standalone.

PG Excerpt:

They’d made a simple meal of toast and eggs which they’d shared out on the back patio. The outdoor area was covered and surrounded by beige stuccoed walls that reached waist high. The edges were soft, the frame of the patio border an arched style that matched the rest of the structure. Large square terracotta tiles made up the flooring, the burnt sienna coloring close to that of the roof ones. Kenneth mused that it really was like the pictures from Ronald’s book. They could have easily been relaxing on the veranda of an Italian Riviera home.
A pang of sadness for his lost lover caught him unaware. He missed him, he always would, but it wasn’t that. It was that he truly believed Ronald would like Saul. He hoped that Ronald somehow knew that Saul was taking care of his boy and that everything was okay with him.
He looked at his lover and was surprised to see Saul regarding him so closely. He was sure it wasn’t displeasure he saw in his eyes, but it wasn’t lust either. Saul was clearly absorbed by his thoughts though, whatever they were.
“Are you ready to talk about what our arrangement will be?”
“Yes, Sir, I am. Do you have a list of tasks and rules for me that you commonly use? We could start from there, if you’d like.”
“No. I wouldn’t like that at all.”
Kenneth swallowed down his fear. What had he done wrong?
“You didn’t do anything wrong, Kenneth.”
He dropped his jaw. How had he known?
Saul chuckled, then leaned over, kissing him on his cheek. After scooting his chair closer, he entwined their fingers together, placing Kenneth’s hand in his lap.
“I could see by the expression on your face that you thought you’d upset or disappointed me somehow. That’s not the case. However, we’re going to do this together, both of us. Once we’re in accord, then you can—actually, we both can—comfortably fulfill our roles in the relationship. Agreed?”
Even though Ronald had always been exceptionally fair in his domination of Kenneth, he’d never included him in the implementation of the rules. He didn’t even want to contemplate Preston’s methods of deciding how things should be done.
“Agreed, Sir.”
“Good. Very good.” Saul took a sip of his coffee before setting it down again. “Do you mind telling me a bit about your first Master? I assume he’s the one you had before you ended up with Preston?”
Kenneth nodded. “Yes, Sir.” He wanted to tell Saul about Ronald. He was the first person he’d ever wanted to share those times with. “Ronald found me when I was working at an antique shop in Hollywood. I was just eighteen and had only been in town for about…oh, I’d say about six months. I’d saved up the train fare to come from Chicago because I’d heard that there were tons of jobs out here. Plus, I wanted the sunshine. It’s too cold back east.”
Saul grunted. “Isn’t it though? I’m from Jersey, so I completely understand your thinking. It was part of my reasoning too.”
Kenneth had never wondered where Saul had come from. All he’d cared about was that he was currently in Los Angeles.
“Then what happened?”
“He was told by the shop owner that I’d been training on how to restore old furniture and that I was a natural with it.”
“Were you?”
Kenneth’s face heated. “I thought so. I really liked it.”
“Hmm. This is good information. I have a few pieces here that belonged to my grandmother that are in quite a sorry state. If you’re so inclined, I’d love to have you take a look at them.”
“I’d be happy to do it. I’ve missed that so much the past few years.”
“So it was something you did when you were with Ronald, but then it was taken away when you ended up with Preston. Is that the case?”
Kenneth turned his head away, his eyes filling with tears. It hadn’t occurred to him until that moment how Preston had literally stripped his life of everything that had held meaning for him. He hadn’t even been allowed to contact his aunt or anyone he’d ever known. Preston had stolen four years of his life that he’d never get back because he’d trusted the wrong person. He didn’t want to be angry with Ronald. He’d loved him so much and he’d been so good to him, but Ronald should’ve warned him about people like Preston. He’d had no idea that something like that could’ve ever happened to him.
“It’s all done now, dearest. I’m here with you and I won’t go away.”
He faced Saul again, swiping at the tears that had fallen on his cheeks. “Ronald went away.”
“But he didn’t mean to, right? What happened?”
“He got cancer of the liver. Years before when he’d been traveling in the near east, he’d contracted hepatitis. We didn’t find out until he was very far gone. The doctors said there wasn’t much that could’ve been done anyway. Still, I like to think if we’d known sooner…” Kenneth swallowed. “Anyway, he went fast. I held him at the end so he wasn’t alone. But then…” More tears fell. “But then I was the one who was alone.”
Saul brought Kenneth’s fingers to his lips, kissing them gently before resting their hands in his lap again. “Then Preston came along and he seemed like the answer.”

Morticia Knight Bio
M/M Erotic Romance author Morticia Knight enjoys a good saucy tale – after all, who doesn’t? Since she loves several genres, you may find your heroes in a contemporary, historical, paranormal or sci-fi setting. One of her passions is bringing people's fantasies to life on the page, because life is too short for even one boring moment. Her stories are volcanic in heat, deep in emotion, and sprinkled with doses of humor.

When not indulging in her obsession for books, she loves the outdoors, film and music. The Pacific Northwest is the ideal spot to enjoy both hiking and beachcombing. Once upon a time she was the singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She now resides on the northern coast of Oregon, where the constant rain and fog remind her of visits to family in England and Scotland when she was a child.

She is currently working on the Sin City Uniforms Series and a BDSM spin-off to the Gin & Jazz series entitled The Hampton Road Club. A follow-up to Bryan and Aubrey’s story in Rockin’ the Alternative will also be available in 2015 through Totally Bound Publishing.
